2014 - my personal wish list

Uwe

Recommended Posts

Hello,

New Year is comming and it's time to write down wishes for the new year. Here are my personal Development Requests for 2014. In general this is also sorted by my personal priorities:

00. Performance, performance, performance

01. Rename items/files (already announced by Daminion for the next release)

02. Customized Views. Now I have a global customizing that doesn't fit to all different media formats. Having Views, I can define a View with customizing to use the catalog with photos, another View to use it for music, another View for documents etc. In the menu (Catalog->Set of Views->PhotoView, MusicView, DocumentView...) I select the View and the client GUI for the different View Modes (Thumbnail List View, Filmstrip...), Catalog Panel and Properties Panel is adjusted by the customizing of the selected View.

03. Assign tags by rules. E.g. as described in the forum: Description = %description% - %author%, or custom_tag_Artist = %artist%

04. Support for the Libre Office Open Document Format files (File types: ODP, ODS...)

05. User defined customizing to assign user defined icons to the "not native supported formats". E.g., I can assign the "ZIP-Icon" and it will be shown in the Thumbnail View and not the "?"-placeholder

06. Support of the "unknown formats" in the tags of the Media Format. Now all different "unknown formats" are collected under the tag "unknown" and can't be selected by "ZIP", "TXT" etc.

07. Detailed status information of the current activities in the status bar, e.g. by pop-up list

08. Pop-up Windows "Assigning Tags..." and similar one are not shown anymore. Information should be shown in the status bar

09. Sometimes I didn't take care for the mouse position and I moved e.g. a Keyword Tag in the Catalog Panel. To avoid this "unintended move" I would like to have a pop-up window to confirm the move of the tag or to cancel it.

10. Support for more than one shared catalog on the same server

11. Support for "Sets" of items. E.g. for panorams or HDR photos there are some source photos and the final photo. I would like to bring them together as Adobe Lightroom does it.

12. "Move" action that works like the "Move" of the Windows File Explorer. We had the discussion here in the forum about this topic.

Update: 10.12.2013

13. XMP sidecar files for all "unknown formats". This keeps all information independend from the database.

14. tbd...

Regards, Uwe

PS, thank you Murat and Daminion for 2013

Basically I agree with Uwe, I have some more Ideas and thoughts though.

] 00. Performance, performance, performance

Performence is always good!

Rename items/files (already announced by Daminion for the next release)

It should have a batch functionality and work like Adobe Bridge instead of Windows.

Adobe bridge doesn't care for the filetype. If I have a folder with jpg and cr2 files they are sorted by creation date time and renamed in that order. Windows does the same but starts from the beginning for every filetype. I don't like that.

[

]02. Customized Views. Now I have a global customizing that doesn't fit to all different media formats. Having Views, I can define a View with customizing to use the catalog with photos, another View to use it for music, another View for documents etc. In the menu (Catalog->Set of Views->PhotoView, MusicView, DocumentView...) I select the View and the client GUI for the different View Modes (Thumbnail List View, Filmstrip...), Catalog Panel and Properties Panel is adjusted by the customizing of the selected View.

agreed. I would even apreciate it, if I could set up multiple monitors. I e.g. have a big one on the wall next to my laptop. I would like to use my laptops monitor maybe only for viewing and have the fullscreen on the big sidescreen or only see the map on the side screen, etc. I would like to have a setup menu to be able to program and save that.

10. Support for more than one shared catalog on the same server
could be usefull

]11. Support for "Sets" of items. E.g. for panorams or HDR photos there are some source photos and the final photo. I would like to bring them together as Adobe Lightroom does it.

I don't know, how Lightroom does that. I e.g. created Collections for Source files which I want to prevent from showing up in the searches and tags unless I allow it by pressing a button.

Collection:

  • Panorama
  • Panorama Sources
  • HDR
  • HDR Sources
  • Special Projects
  • Special Projects Sources

Here my wishes:

  1. I would like to see export profiles set globaly, so me, the administrator could set up some, e.g. for exporting to various iOS devices and make them available global to all users.
  2. Face Recognition should finaly work. Maybe you guys can write a small tool that converts thos Picasa files into the format Daminion uses. I mean, I'm not a programmer, but it can't be that hard to have a program, that reads tags and writes them to other places in the tags. In my opinion a Database that is working with pictures and does not support Face Recognition is not competitive. I made some suggestions already. I found a software that would do that, but it was too outdated. Since I'm almost completly done in picasa with my whole harddrive to tag the pictures, I would appreciate it, if Daminion would be able to import those tags and let them stay in the Picasa Database, in order to allow me to continue tagging until Daminion can do the facelocation.
  3. I would like to see the user functions working better. If my parents (standard users) do some changes, I would like to open a panel within the shared catalog and and see that changes, so If I see, they did something wrong I can simply press "undo".e.g. tagging. The same with deleting. The Sotware "Antitwin" finds duplicates and saves them to a folder called "antitwin" before erasing them. that would be great.
  4. I would be very usefull to find duplicates. (already announced)
  5. exchaning files. I would like Daminion to find me all tif files and convert them to jpeg, takes much less space.
  6. Streaming capibilities (Murat you said something about the API?) It would be awesome if daminion could to Media Streaming on a DLNA-Standard . With on-the-fly video encoding. By using this I don't have to share all the folders in my network.
  7. iPad Software, with full functionality. tagging etc. this would make it much easier to tag your databse in front of your television. A function to directly export pictures into a "new" photobook on your idevice.
  8. iPhone Software, only viewing capabilities maybe some basic tagging. A function to directly export pictures into a "new" photobook on your idevice.
  9. Until the iPad Version would be ready a simple Browser Interface would be great to be able to make the catalog visible on macs and iOS. In the end I would like to have real software for iOs, but since there is no mac version a web interface would be great.
  10. assinging tags in background and reading from tags as well as updating thumbnails in the background.
  11. having the server creating thumbnails for every files. this thumbnails would than be transfered to the client computers in order to make them always available. After doing this Daminion Client would load the file itself.
  12. a fixed timezone problem.

Ok, I guess that is it.

Thanks for this great peace of Software and I hope Daminion will allways be with us.

Hi Uwe! great list :)

My vote on this ones:

This one would be great, for instance, for videos I'm interested on seeing different tags than when browsing pictures. Having customized views would be helpful to fast switch between the info I want to be displayed.

03. Assign tags by rules. E.g. as described in the forum: Description = %description% - %author%, or custom_tag_Artist = %artist%

This one will be awesome to automate tagging. Would be great to be able to "assign by rule" while importing or afterwards with a "Run rule..." command.

09. Sometimes I didn't take care for the mouse position and I moved e.g. a Keyword Tag in the Catalog Panel. To avoid this "unintended move" I would like to have a pop-up window to confirm the move of the tag or to cancel it.

This has happened to me a couple of times :) Bad thing is when the Tag has hundreds or thousands items assigned (as the movement triggers the sync process)

Regards!

Hi,

good lists.

08. Pop-up Windows "Assigning Tags..." and similar one are not shown anymore. Information should be shown in the status bar.

09. Sometimes I didn't take care for the mouse position and I moved e.g. a Keyword Tag in the Catalog Panel. To avoid this "unintended move" I would like to have a pop-up window to confirm the move of the tag or to cancel it.

The point 9 +1 only if we can turn that window off permanently. :) At least I'm moving tags a lot, a pop-up window would be the same annoying thing as point 8. :)

But I think we need a good old Undo feature instead. :)

11. Support for "Sets" of items. E.g. for panorams or HDR photos there are some source photos and the final photo. I would like to bring them together as Adobe Lightroom does it.

Sets and stacks, but I think they are related in some way. :)

+1 Or at least Daminion finally could read MWG Regions.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll more carefull read this topic today a bit later.

Uwe, could you please disclose the first topic that is related to the Performance. Performance of which Daminion parts you wish to improve?

Hello Murat,

my top points are the import and rescan folder activities. Here some information regarding the import:

I'm "offline" now I can only work with the local catalog on my laptop and not with the PC and the shared catalog as usual.

Here the basic data: Win764bit, German, all data are on a 256GB Samsung640 SSD, partition C: = system, partition E: = data drive with: local catalog, import folder

I've just "scanned" the log (searching for the most time consuming part) of an import of 10 CR2 files including the conversion to DNG in a new local catalog, then the import of 10 DNG files (converted before with the Adobe DNG converter and than the import of 10 JPG files. After each import I've removed and deleted the imported files and optimized the catalog. Then I started the new import.

Import of 10 CR2 files with DNG conversion

2013-12-03 08:41:00,803 [19] DEBUG PicaJet.Daminion.Service.Utils.DirectImportFileCommand [(null)] End: (25)

2013-12-03 08:41:06,154 [20] DEBUG PicaJet.Daminion.Service.Utils.DirectImportFileCommand [(null)] Start: (30)

My question: what happens in the gap of 5sec between both log entries?

I guess: the DNG conversion. But why do you wait for the process? Is it possible to split the import in parallel import tasks?

Draft suggestion: Copy the CR2 files from the source (CF/SD Card, source folder etc.) to a temporary folder. Call as much as possible parallel processes of the DNG converter to convert the CR2 to DNG. In this case = 10. Then, depending on the parameter of the Import Dialog, you can import both (CR2 and DNG) or DNG only.

Import of 10 CR2 files

2013-12-03 09:12:24,006 [17] DEBUG PicaJet.Daminion.Service.Utils.DirectImportFileCommand [(null)] End: (27)

2013-12-03 09:12:24,084 [4] DEBUG PicaJet.Daminion.Service.Utils.DirectImportFileCommand [(null)] Start: (32)

The Import of the CR2 file is much faster without the delay

Import of 10 DNG files

2013-12-03 14:57:26,412 [4] DEBUG PicaJet.Daminion.Service.Utils.DirectImportFileCommand [(null)] End: (34)

2013-12-03 14:57:26,942 [11] DEBUG PicaJet.Daminion.Service.Utils.DirectImportFileCommand [(null)] Start: (39)

the import of the DNG file is faster with a delay of 500ms. Why is there a delay of 500ms compared to the delay of 80ms for CR2 files?

and here the result for JPG files with a short delay of 100ms

2013-12-03 15:09:36,088 [24] DEBUG PicaJet.Daminion.Service.Utils.DirectImportFileCommand [(null)] End: (52)

2013-12-03 15:09:36,181 [23] DEBUG PicaJet.Daminion.Service.Utils.DirectImportFileCommand [(null)] Start: (57)

There are still performance issues at the full screen image viewing, too. Daminion still thinking sometimes 3-4 seconds on images, and total randomly, so it's not a problem with the images, other times it renders the same images right away, so I can't reproduce it.

But the main problem is that, in overall, the full screen viewer hasn't a continuous fast feeling.

I totally agree. When I'm in Full Screen Mode one can expect that I go to the next image(s) or back to the Thumbnail View. Is it possible to load the next image(s) already in the background when I'm still viewing the current one? And maybe to keep images in a buffer if one moves forward and backward (e.g. to compare some images)?
