Preview Window Bug

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I created a new server-based catalog with 215,000+ images. I plan to work with that catalog for a while and will report anything that looks like a bug. Incidentally, it took about 28 hours to import the 215K+ images. Any chance for CUDA support in the future?

Here's the bug report. The preview window does not properly display portrait oriented images that are in CR2 or CRW format. See here for an example:

I also tried JPEG and PSD and they were OK.

I have to buy a faster machine, it took me about 36-38 hours to import 200k files with my 2.5 ghz quad. :)

Hi Mammut,

I know you were joking about the new machine but I can't resist commenting. I hope I'm not violating any Forum Rules by doing so. If I am, let me know and I'll delete this post or you can.

I think you're located in Russia, but just the same, if you really ever want to purchase a faster system consider the guys at ADK (http://www.adkvideoediting.com/). I have no connection with them other than being a VERY satisfied customer. They ship worldwide. I'm in Newfoundland and they are in Kentucky. They target their systems at video editing but they build fast machines for general use too. They also include free lifetime support via the Internet. Whenever I've had a problem with my machine, they've logged into my system the same day to diagnose and fix it. I just had a video card fail and they did the whole diagnosis over the Internet. They also gave me warranty credit on my failed GLX580 video card toward an upgrade to a new GLX680. That's something the OEM will not do. They shipped a replacement card and my system was up and running with the new card only 3 days later. IMO their customer service is as good as yours and that is saying a lot because yours is fantastic! :)

Hi,

yeah, I was just joking. :) I bought too many PCs (or cpus, or motherboards, or video cards, etc.) when I was playing new games all the time. I have now a console for that, so I'm fine. :)

I rather hope that after the optimizations I'll not have any speed problems. ;) Above 100k files Daminion tends to slow down a little now, but there were a lot of development in the past months, like tag assignments, there were timeout errors before and now it's working like a miracle with 200k files, too. So there is still a lot of work, but it'll be good and hopefully fast.

By the way, I'm not too far from Russia, I'm in Hungary. :)

And Daminion's customer service is really good, yeah. :) (I say that especially now, that I bought iExplorer from another company a few days ago, and it's not working, and I'm waiting, and waiting, and waiting for their answer... :( )

Regards,

mammut

Mammut,

Opps. I've seen so many posts by you in this forum that I thought you were working with Daminion. My mistake. :)

I love the way Daminion is aimed at meta data and search/cataloging functions rather than image processing. IMO it has great potential. I'm thinking about buying the product now, while it's still in Beta as a gesture of support. With the version up to 0.9.9, I wonder if they are planning the commercial release of v1.0. I kind of hope not because IMO it still has a few too many bugs and an early release with too many bugs might turn off potential customers. I'm sure it's a tough call for them.

:)

I'm trying to help where I can, I need a good DAM, and I beilieve that Daminion will be that.

There are some bugs but the majority of the bugs are solved already, at least I found much more and more often a few months ago.

I'm working with the program mostly without a problem, and those problems are mostly because I'm missing features and not because of errors. Of course I'm working only with jpg and psd files.

Yeah, a few bugs are still bugs, they need to be solved. But I think there will be a lot of work before the v1.0 anyway.

I hope they'll solve your CR2 preview problem soon. :)

Any chance for CUDA support in the future?

There are other bottle-necks that should be optimized before adding CUDA support: multi-thread image processing, database optimizations. We plan series of optimizations after ~3 minor updates.

Here's the bug report. The preview window does not properly display portrait oriented images that are in CR2 or CRW format.

I can't reproduce an issue with my CR2 files and with a few test CRW images. Can you send me a few test pictures?

Does the problem exists in 721 build and with a newly created local catalog?

Great approach. Love to see the bugs fixed first then the optimization done. Multi-threading and CUDA ought to help a LOT with my system. :)

The Preview Window problem does still exist with 721. Here is a link to a screen grab of a 3 image, local database created with 721:

I am suspicious that the problem is caused by the rotation being in the XMP sidecars. My guess is that the preview window is not using the sidecar data. Just a thought.
