"Group by" on import

What does "group by" (folder / modify date / ...) in the import dialogue do? I can find no other mention of "group".

This option groups images by some file properties, like File Modified Date, File Type and Folder.

This is a handy feature when for example you have multiple photo sessions on the same Flash card and need to distinquish them by taken date. But please note that we use File properties info here (but not the Exif data) for fast file processing, otherwise the grouping process will take a long time.

Another example if you need to import just PDF documents from your My Documents folders.

Yes, but that is a dialogue that only appears on import, so what use is it?

I don't quite understand the point. If you only "group" the images on import but that grouping is not available after the images have been imported, then what is the point?

How can I access a "group" after the images have been imported.

Or perhaps I understand, with second thoughts:

Is the purpose to allow you to *import* only a subset of the images that the dialogue shows? If that is the case, then I understand the point. You can then chose which group to import, e.g. import only the images from one sub-folder or from one modified-date. (But you might want to mention it in the wiki ;-) )

Yep, exactly: the purpose is to allow you to *import* only a subset of the images that the dialogue shows.

Our wiki is a bit outdated, but we plan to rewrite it as well add a few new tutorials to our web-site.
